14 MDPI journals celebrate 10-year anniversaries in 2025

2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the inaugural issue publications for fourteen of our international, Open Access, peer-reviewed journals. This is a significant milestone that can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of countless people, from Editorial Board Members to reviewers. To celebrate, wed like to spotlight some key milestones, highlights, and accomplishments that have helped to shape these journals into what they are today, further demonstrating MDPI’s commitment to building quality journals.

At MDPI, we are proud to support such a diverse range of research fields, and are eminently grateful for the trust that individuals and research teams within the scholarly community continue put in us to publish their research with rigor and efficiency. Every member of MDPI’s talented editorial staff is committed to the advancement and upholding of their associated journals.

Impact

The longevity of these journals can be significantly credited to the high quality of their published research. Over 29,700 papers have been published across these journals, receiving an impressive combined total of over 223,000 citations and over 42,000,000 downloads. The journal pages have also received a total of over 94,000,000 views. These metrics demonstrate the journals’ widespread impact, and significant influence on the scientific progress of their respective fields.

The article that has received the highest number of citations from this year’s anniversary journals is “Global and Multi-National Prevalence of Fungal Diseases—Estimate Precision” by Dr. Felix Bongomin, Dr. Sara Gago, Dr Rita O. Oladele, and Dr. David W. Denning. Published in the Journal of Fungi (JOF) in 2017, the paper has thus far obtained a substantial total of over 2,000 citations.

These journals have also been chosen by Nobel Prize winners as platforms to publish their research. A prominent example includes Prof. Dr. Gerard ‘t Hooft who published in Universe in 2021 (Winner of Nobel Prize in Physics in 1999). Prof. Dr. George F. Smoot, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006 is also an advisory board member of Universe.

Indexing & Ranking

We are incredibly proud that each of this year’s anniversary journals is covered by a wide range of indexing databases. Notably, each of them is covered by both Scopus (Elsevier) and Web of Science (Clarivate).

Journal Impact Factor (JIF, Clarivate) is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a scholarly journal has been cited in a particular year. This year’s 10th anniversary journals have all achieved impact factors, with Gels holding the highest rating of 5.0.

CiteScore (Elsevier) calculates the citations from all documents published in a journal in year one to all documents published in the prior three years. The current CiteScores for this year’s 10th anniversary journals range from 1.6 upwards, with IJNS, JoF, and ncRNA all achieving a score of 6.7.

Each of these metrics demonstrates the quality, value, and high regard held for the research contributions from these journals.

The journals excel in scholarly rankings, examples including Beverages ranking in Q1 in the “Food Science” CiteScore category and the Journal of Imaging ranking in Q1 in both “Computer Graphics and Computer-Aided Design” and “Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Imaging”. Outstandingly, IJNS is ranked in Q1 for two separate Journal Citation Report (JCR) categories and three separate CiteScore categories:

  • Genetics and Heredity
  • Pediatrics
  • Pediatrics, Perinatology and Child Health
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Immunology and Microbiology (miscellaneous)

Each of these metrics demonstrates the quality, value, and high regard held for the research contributions from these journals.

Open Access

As evidenced, throughout their 10-year lifespans each journal has fulfilled their shared goal of providing high quality Open Access (OA) research. OA is a model for scholarly publishing that makes scientific information available to readers at no cost, and allows you to retain the copyright for your work through the use of the Creative Commons License. This ensures that research is accessible for all, encourages collaboration, and establishes transparency in scientific communication.

“The focus of this journal is to advance safety science and technology through the reporting and exchange of scientific evidence and rigorous analyses that will lead to the improvement of public and industrial safety and societal health related to safety” – Prof. Dr. Raphael H. Grzebieta, EiC of Safety.

Publishing your research openly means that citations can come from more diverse disciplines, institutions, and regions that lack the financial resources to pay for access. This also allows the journals to increase their reach, and have expansive real-world impact on a varied range of industries.

Editorial Board Members

We are immensely appreciative of every Editor-in-Chief, Section Editor-in-Chief, and Editorial Board Member for their invaluable contributions to these journals. MDPI’s Chief Editors work tirelessly to provide support and guidance regarding their journal’s scope, development strategies and policies, along with suggesting conference and institutions collaborations. Read below a selection of testimonials from some of this year’s 10th anniversary journals’ EBMs:

“This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication of the editorial team, editors, reviewers, and predominantly authors who have contributed to its success and have been part of this journey.” – Prof. Dr. Craig. E. Banks, EiC of Fermentation.

“It has been a pleasure to contribute to the journal’s success, and I highly recommend Batteries to researchers seeking a reputable platform to share their work with the global academic community.” – Prof. Dr. Prodip K. Das, EBM of Batteries.

“Here’s to many more years of impactful research, discovery, and continued success for Gels! May the journal continue to flourish and push the boundaries of gel science in all its dimensions.” – Prof. Dr. David Díaz Díaz, Founding EiC of Gels.

Community & Outreach

Due to MDPI’s global reach, our journals provide excellent promotional platforms for societies, both attracting members and improving citation prospects. Many of the 10th anniversary journals have such affiliations, such as ncRNA with Cardiolinc, C with the Spanish Carbon Group, Batteries with the International Society for Porous Media (Interpore), and many more. Learn more about MDPI’s Society Affiliations Program.

Awards

Many MDPI Journals also give out annual awards to recognize the most impactful contributions and raise the influence of talented individuals. Nobel Prize winner Prof. Dr. Gerard ‘t Hooft won the Universe 2023 Best Paper Award for his paper “Quantum Clones Inside Black Holes”. Read the full interview with Prof. Dr. ‘t Hooft.

Many of these journals have awards that are currently open, including Magnetochemistry which will announce the winner(s) of their Outstanding Reviewer Award in March 2026.
