Editor-in-Chief

As Infrastructures founding Editor-in-Chief (EiC), Professor Dr. Pedro Arias-Sánchez has guided the journal from its infancy into a premier platform for research on a broad range of topics within the study of infrastructures.

Professor Dr. Arias-Sánchez began his current position as Professor of Cartographic, Geodesic and Photogrammetry Engineering at The University of Vigo, Spain, in 2020. Prior to this, he had served as a full-time lecturer at the university for more than 20 years, specializing in geomatics techniques, encompassing topics such as close range photogrammetry, terrestrial laser scanner, mobile laser systems, and mobile sensors.

He is also listed as a co-author on a high volume of publications and has participated in an expansive list of research projects. Further, in 2024 he was announced as a recipient of the Isidro Parga Pondal medal for his contributions to geotechnologies, in particular geointelligence, which combines techniques and tools related to artificial intelligence with geospatial information.

Aims and scope

Infrastructures are crucial components in the development of a country, enhancing its productivity, efficiency of production, transportation, and communication.

In the journal’s first editorial piece, Professor Dr. Pedro Arias-Sánchez highlighted how advances in infrastructures had seen ‘enormous growth’ in the decades preceding the journal’s launch. This potential for further scholarly exploration, coupled with the universally accessible benefits of MDP’s Open Access platform, made the establishment of Infrastructures an exciting endeavour.

“The aim of Infrastructures is to publish regular research papers, critical reviews, and short communications in the main topics: road, railway, coastal, airport, and energy infrastructures.” – Prof. Dr. Pedro Arias- Sánchez, EiC 2016-present

The Infrastructures community

Infrastructures engages with its academic community through MDPI’s Awards program, society affiliations, and conferences.

Awards

To recognise emerging scholars and enhance communication among scientists, the journal offers various awards to researchers.

For its early career researchers, Infrastructures offers both the Travel Award and Young Investigator Award. Also, to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of its reviewers, the journal also hosts the Outstanding Reviewer Award.

See the most recent winners of these awards here.

Society affiliations

Infrastructures is proudly affiliated to the International Society for Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport Infrastructures (iSMARTi).

Established in 2004, the main objective of iSMARTi is to promote the exchange of advanced knowledge and practical experiences among infrastructure engineering and management professionals.

This society is focused on the maintenance and rehabilitation of infrastructure assets within transport systems, including corridors, airports, roads, pavements, tunnels and bridges, railroads, and more.

Members of iSMARTi should contact their society representative to learn more about the benefits of publishing with MDPI, such as discounts on article processing charges (APC).

Conferences

Readers of Infrastructures are invited to attend the 12th World Sustainability Forum, organized by MDPI’s Sustainability journal.

The event will take place from 21 to 24 August 2026, in Hong Kong, China, and explores various topics related to the field on infrastructures. These include emerging technologies and Integrated Solutions for sustainable cities, resilient urban energy Infrastructure, and more.
