A history of Cosmetics
The inaugural issue of Cosmetics was released in March 2014, with Prof. Dr Enzo Berardesca appointed as the founding Editor-in-Chief. A research professor at the Phillip Frost Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, University of Miami, his research interests include barrier function, pigmentation, ethnic dermatology, skin irritation and skin aging.
Prof. Dr. Berardesca took on the role of Editor-in-Chief with the belief that publications related to cosmetic sciences from other journals at the time were often restricted to very narrow audiences, making them less translational and therefore more difficult to share with the scholarly community. As the first Open Access journal inclusive of all professional categories related to cosmetic development, Cosmetics provides a global platform for open scientific exchange

Cosmetics attracted 20 publications within its first year, demonstrating a great potential for growth from an early stage, as well as an active scholarly community. In 2018, the journal was indexed in Scopus (Elsevier), followed three years later by ESCI (Web of Science). Cosmetics is currently covered by a wide range of indexing and abstracting services, including DOAJ, ProQuest, J-Gate, and more.
10th Anniversary (2014-2024)
2024 marked the 10th anniversary of Cosmetics, with the journal releasing two Special Issues to celebrate the occasion:
- “10th Anniversary of Cosmetics – Recent Advances and Perspectives” edited by Dr. Vasil Georgiev.
- “Current and Future Trends in Cosmetics Research: The 10th Anniversary of Cosmetics” edited by Prof. Dr. Enzo Berardesca.

Aims & scope
Cosmetics aims to bring together basic scientists, cosmetic chemists, dermatologists and clinicians to share their theoretical and experimental research with the global community without any restrictions under an Open Access publishing model.
Articles published in Cosmetics are licensed under an Open Access Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license, making them free to read and download. This also supports the reuse and quotation of the articles (providing that the original published version is cited), allowing for maximum use and exposure of the work whilst ensuring that authors receive proper credit.
An Open Access publication model becomes particularly important when considering research areas such as cosmetics, making scientific findings and treatment descriptions for highly specialised topics accessible within a clinical setting.
General subject areas included in Cosmetics range from in vivo and in vitro testing of cosmetic products and product formulations to cosmetic surgery and the various ethical issues associated with cosmetic research.
Cosmetics journal metrics
Journal statistics as of December 2024.
CiteScore (Scopus) is a metric that can be used to gain an idea of a particular journal’s scholarly impact, through measuring the average number of citations it receives over a certain period. We are proud to share that the journal has been listed in Q1 for both Surgery and Dermatology with an overall CiteScore of 5.2.
Since its launch, Cosmetics has generated almost 700 mentions in international news outlets, 105 citations within patents, and 10 policy papers, demonstrating a high level of real-world impact and reach.
Cosmetics first received an Impact Factor of 3.3 in the Journal Citation Reports™ (JCR, Clarivate) in 2022. Journal Impact Factor is calculated by dividing the total number of current year citations to publications from the previous 2 years by the number of citable publications published in the journal during the same time period. With a slight increase in the Impact Factor in 2023, the journal is ranked Q2 in Dermatology and in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in JCR.
The title for the most cited Cosmetics publication is currently held by Asja Sarkic and Iris Stappen for their paper “Essential Oils and Their Single Compounds in Cosmetics—A Critical Review” which has received 277 citations.
