Spotlight on Polymers
This week, we’re shining a spotlight on Polymers. With its first issue launched in 2009, the journal has grown considerably over the years. Here, we’ll look at its history, scope and aims as well as the submission process for researchers interested in publishing with the journal.
A history of Polymers
Polymers was launched in 2009 as a quarterly publication with Prof. Dr. Alexander Böker as Editor in Chief (EiC). During its 16-year history the journal has grown in scope and output, with the aim of publishing high-quality Open Access research related to all areas of polymer science.
In 2014, Polymers launched the first edition of its Best Paper Award to recognize high-quality, impactful research that is of scientific significance. A number of other awards have been established since, including the Young Investigator Award, Best Paper Award and Best PhD Thesis Award. Polymers in numbers
In total, Polymers has published 24,697 papers, of which 10,120 have been cited 10 or more times. The journal has also seen a steady rise in both its Citescore and Impact Factor since 2009; the history of these metrics can be seen through the graphs below.
Sections and scope
The topics, sections and scope of the journal have evolved since it was first launched. Today, the journal aims to publish communications and review articles that advance the following fields: (i) polymerization methods, (ii) theory, simulation, and modeling, (iii) understanding of new physical phenomena, (iv) advances in characterization techniques, and (v) harnessing of self-assembly and biological strategies for producing complex multifunctional structures. The specific sections now include:

- Polymer Synthesis
- Polymer Physics;
- Polymer Theory and Simulation;
- Polymer Processing and Performance;
- Polymer Applications;
- Biopolymers.
