Spotlight on Publications

Scholarly publishing is the means through which all academic fields progress. Through the academic record, scholars can build upon each other’s work, reviewing and updating past research.

It is thus important to critically evaluate academic publishing and culture as meticulously as any other field of research. In doing so, all aspects of scholarly communication can be improved, including research integrity, publication ethics, and theory and practices.

Here, we’ll take a look at how MDPI’s Publications has contributed to the field of scholarly publishing.

A brief history of Publications

Publications released its inaugural issue in 2013 and was published as a quarterly journal. It set its scope wide, covering all issues around publishing and best practice—from digitisation in scholarly publishing to public access and engagement with research.

Publications was indexed in Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI)—Web of Science in 2015 and Scopus—Elsevier Databases in 2017. The same year, its 100th paper was also published. 2019 saw Publications receive its first CiteScore of 1.96, increasing to 3.5 in 2022. It was also published in ANVUR the same year.

Last year, in 2023, Publications celebrated its 10th anniversary. It also received a CiteScore of 5.0, reflecting the growth and increasing impact of this journal over the past decade.

Publications in 2024

Since its launch, Publications has published 436 papers, with 121 being cited 10 times or more. It currently has an Impact Factor of 3.8. It is still published as a quarterly journal and dedicated to providing a platform for the discussion of all aspects of scholarly publishing and culture.
