Gout, Urate, and Crystal Deposition Disease (GUCDD) MDPI: Journal Spotlight
As a pioneer of Open Access publishing, MDPI seeks to support the scholarly community by helping societies and scientific institutions to venture into this publishing model. MDPI currently supports more than 220 societies and organisations, ranging from affiliations to publishing journals on behalf of societies.
In this edition of our Journal Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at the achievements and growth of Gout, Urate, and Crystal Deposition Disease (GUCDD).
GUCDD (ISSN 2813-4583) is an international, peer-reviewed Open Access journal that publishes reviews, research papers and reports on gout, urate, and other crystal deposition disease such as calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease. GUCDD was launched in 2023 in partnership with the Gout, Hyperuricemia and Crystal Associated Disease Network (G-CAN).
Following its indexing in Scopus (Elsevier) in 2025, the journal received its first CiteScore of 1.5 that year, rising to 4.2 in 2026. It has also been indexed in ESCI (Web of Science) since 2025. Achieving indexing within such a short timeframe since its launch represents an important milestone and reflects the journal’s commitment to rigorous editorial standards, high-quality research, and scientific relevance within the community.

G-CAN partnership
Partnering with societies reflects MDPI’s commitment to working alongside scholarly societies to support collaboration and knowledge exchange. GUCDD is proud to be the official journal for G-CAN, an international US-based volunteer organisation dedicated to creating research and education initiatives to fill the gout, urate biology and crystal-associated diseases knowledge gap.
G-CAN was founded in 2015 and, with more than 300 members, is one of the largest organisations in the world dedicated to furthering research in this field.
The organisation’s mission statement sets out its three main aims:
- Launch and support novel research and education initiatives to help fill the knowledge gap in the field of gout, hyperuricemia and crystal-associated diseases;
- Facilitate the sharing of resources and information related to the field;
- Foster networking and collaboration across related medical disciplines and scientific communities.
G-CAN has generated this first-of-its-kind journal to focus on quality, peer-reviewed articles in the field of gout and crystal deposition disease. The society also hosts an international Annual Research Symposium that incorporates an Early Career Investigator Symposium.
This year, the 12th Symposium will be taking place in Orlando, Florida, from 4 to 5 November 2026. Abstracts are being accepted until 31 July and participation in the symposium is greatly encouraged.

Editors-in-Chief
GUCDD has had two co-Editors-in-Chief since its launch in 2023: Prof. Dr. Tristan Pascart and Dr. Tony Merriman.
Prof. Dr. Pascart is currently the Head of the Department of Rheumatology at Lille Catholic University, France, and Dr. Merriman is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama, United States. Between them, their research interests cover numerous subjects, including genetics of gout and hyperuricemia, calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD), innate immune responses to monosodium urate crystals and autoimmune diseases.

Aims & scope
The co-Editors-in-Chief bring attention to the importance of research into gout and crystal deposition-associated disorders as the leading causes of inflammation and arthritis in the journal’s first editorial piece. The editorial discusses how research in this field has markedly expanded over the last 20 years, and that GUCDD aims to publish a spectrum of research that encompasses basic-translational research to epidemiology, clinical and clinical-translational research.
“The rise in numbers of publications on gout and closely related topics alone is only the beginning of a wave of discovery and innovation […] We aim to help broaden the interdisciplinary community that will contribute further advances in this area. The journal’s scope includes gout, other crystalline arthritis, crystallography, genetics and genomics and associated cardiorenal disease. A full list of topics in the journal’s scope can be found here.

Most cited and viewed
The most cited paper published in GUCDD since its launch, as of July 2026, is: “Gout and Cardiovascular Disease: Mechanisms, Risk Estimations, and the Impact of Therapies”. The journal’s most viewed paper is entitled “Periarticular Calcifications: Clinical Features and Treatment Options”.
CiteScore
The journal’s CiteScore sits at 4.2 as of 2026, a significant increase from its first score of 1.5 in an impressively short space of time.
Despite only launching in 2023, GUCDD is already positioned in Q2 for the “Medicine (miscellaneous)” and “Rheumatology” CiteScore categories.
MDPI is awaiting the first Impact Factor for GUCDD to be released but hopes to see the same successful trajectory as its CiteScore.

The GUCDD community
Fostering meaningful connections with the academic community is a priority for GUCDD. The journal actively supports researchers through a range of initiatives designed to encourage collaboration and recognise excellence, such as affiliations, events, and awards.
Awards
GUCDD presents the Best PhD Thesis Award annually to recognise young scholars who are judged to have completed the most outstanding PhD thesis in the field, and to encourage the continuation of their work and contributions.
The 2026 winner will be announced on 31 July 2026.
G-CAN also offers several of its own awards, such as the Gold Medal Award and Master Award, that are presented to recognise successful researchers in the field.
