Spotlight on Foods
Today, we’re looking at MDPI’s interdisciplinary journal Foods, which covers all aspects of food research, with a major emphasis on the “science of food”. Let’s look at the development and aims of Foods since its first issue in 2012 and how to submit manuscripts.
A history of Foods
Foods launched its inaugural issue in 2012 and published as a quarterly journal. In its opening year, Dr. Charles Brennan was appointed as the Editor-in-Chief and six articles were published.
From 2013 to 2021, Prof. Dr. Christopher J. Smith was appointed as the Editor-in-Chief. The journal continued to grow, being indexed in Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) in 2015 and Science Citation Index Expanded in 2018. In 2019, the journal received its first Impact Factor of 3.011.
The journal’s growth rapidly increased at the end of the decade and into the 2020s, with 216 papers published in 2018, 1953 in 2020, and 4187 in 2022, which marked its 10th anniversary.
Annual conferences and new sections
Since 2020, Foods has held annual electronic conferences on “Food Science and Functional Foods”, “Future Foods and Food Technologies for a Sustainable World”, and “Food Food, Microbiome, and Health”.
Additionally, the journal’s broad scope has enabled it to consistently expand its sections. It currently features 20 sections, see the full list here.
Foods in 2023
As of 2023, Foods has a CiteScore of 5.8 and has published over 13,000 papers and over 3400 papers that have been cited 10 times or more. The current Editor-in-Chief is Prof. Dr. Arun K. Bhunia, who began this role in 2021 and is a researcher of microbiology, pathogenesis, and host‒pathogen interaction.
Its current Impact Factor is 5.2 and its 5-Year Impact Factor is 5.5.
