March 21st marks the International Day of Forests, a day to raise awareness of the importance of forests around the world, and our role in ensuring their preservation. In light of this, this month’s spotlight piece will explore Forests, an MDPI open-access journal.
A pioneer in research related to forestry and ecology, Forests covers themes ranging from forest engineering to forest governance and education. The journal publishes different forms of content, including reviews, original articles as well as research proposals, and research ideas.
A brief timeline of Forests
The first issue of Forests was published in 2010, marking the official launch of the journal where it was established as a quarterly journal. After three years, the journal was not only indexed in Web of Science but also received its first impact factor. A year later the journal was set to publishing on a monthly basis.
As of the 14th of March 2024, the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Prof. Dr. Giacomo Alessandro Gerosa, whose current research interest focuses on the exchange process of matter and energy between atmosphere and ecosystems in forests. In a recent interview, Prof. Dr. Gerosa sates that Forests has a good reputation in the forest community and that the journal Forests has a strong future, with its impact factor increasing over the years (currently 2.9). The journal will focus on ensuring all research published is of the highest calibre and include the most innovative ideas in the field.
Sections and topics
In subsequent years, different sections were set up to ensure the journal covered a different range of cutting-edge topics in the field of ecology and forestry.
This includes sections such as:
- Forest Ecology and Management
- Forest Ecophysiology and Biology
- Genetics and Molecular Biology
- Forest Soil
- Forest Hydrology
Sections are continuously added to include the latest topics in ecology and to progress this ever-growing field of research.
