Spotlight on Social Sciences
Social Sciences is in the spotlight this week. We’re excited to draw attention towards one of MDPI’s most unique journals. In a long list of respected journals focused on various sciences, Social Sciences has its sights set on a wide range of fields, ranging from law and philosophy to education and anthropology.
With over a decade of fascinating papers, let’s take a look at some of the milestones and achievements of this journal.
A history of Social Sciences
Social Sciences started its life as a quarterly publication in 2011, helmed by Prof. Dr. Martin Bull. Not surprisingly, given that MDPI has always been very focused on producing high quality scientific journals, interest in Social Sciences took time to nurture. These efforts paid off in 2016 when the journal was indexed in Scopus.
The following year, Prof. Dr. Bull stepped down as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, and Emeritus Prof. Nigel Parton has served since.
That same year, Social Sciences adopted a monthly publication schedule, received its first CiteScore (2017) of 0.60, and established a number of sections, including Gender Studies, Contemporary Politics and Society, and Social Economics. More sections followed in 2020:
Work, Employment and the Labor Market;
International Migration;
Family Studies;
Children and Youth Studies;
Social Stratification and Inequality.
Social Sciences and the 2020s
The journal moved into the 2020s with some strong achievements. In 2021, it was indexed in Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI)—Web of Science and also received a CiteScore of 2.3. In 2020, the same year that the journal celebrated its 10th anniversary, it also established a new section, International Relation. Finally, in 2023, in a landmark achievement, the journal received its first Impact Factor of 1.7 along with an increased CiteScore of 3.2. We look forward to seeing the continued growth of the journal.
